Amid the ongoing political crisis in Maharashtra, the State administration imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in the Thane region of Shiv Sena.

The situation came after Mr. Eknath Shinde, a senior leader of the Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Cabinet protested against the Maharashtra Government,  with the support of 40 MLAs of Maharashtra.  The political crisis is said to be a threat to the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA,) an alliance of the Shiv Sena, the National Congress Party, and the Indian National Congress.

Any kind of political rally, gathering and events have been prohibited amid the insatiable situation, after the input that the Shiv Sainiks, in support of Mr. Eknath Shinde, are planning to take out a rally.  Notably, Thane is the stronghold of the rebel leader Mr. Eknath Shinde, who is currently in Guwahati, Assam.  Along with Mr. Eknath Shinde, 40 MLAs are also with him in Assam, campaigning against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray-led the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) Government.

Furthermore, any kind of arms, burning posters, burning effigy are banned,” said the Thane district administration in the order.  According to the order issued by Thane District Collector Mr. Rajesh Narvekar and District Magistrate Dr. Mahendra Kalyankar, “Shouting slogans or playing songs on the speaker is not allowed too.”  The order further reads, “To maintain law and order situation in Thane, the District Collector and District Magistrate, Thane, issues prohibition order of 24 hours till June 30th.”

Besides Thane, the administration also imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in Mumbai, till the 14th of July.
