Five people were killed and 3 injured after an intense fire broke out at an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) plant in Uran, Navi Mumbai.

The incident took place around 7:00 A.M., on the 3rd of September.

The injured sustained burns and were immediately admitted to a private hospital.

The ONGC took to Twitter and reported the incident.  The tweet read, “A fire broke out in stormwater drainage early morning in Uran oil and gas processing plant. ONGC fire services and crisis management team immediately pressed into action. Fire is being contained. No impact on oil processing. Gas diverted to Hazira Plant. The situation is being assessed.”

Fire tenders of ONGC, Dronagiri and Panvel rushed to the spot and doused the fire.  The reason behind the fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained.

The ONGC also said there was no impact on oil processing due to the fire and the gas was diverted to the Hazira Plant in Surat, Gujarat.

The ONGC is a state run crude oil and natural gas company in India.  It contributes approximately 70 % to the domestic production in India.

Fire tenders are conducting the rescue operations as many are still trapped inside the plant.  The Mumbai Police cordoned off the areas located within 2 km of the Uran plant.

This is a developing story.

Stay tuned for further updates.
