According to reports, a sweeper in a hospital in Balasore stood over the dead body of Salamani Barik (76) and pressed it down with his foot and then broke the bones to make it a compact bundle. Later, two others wrapped the body in cloth and plastic and slung it on to a bamboo stick before carrying it.

Salamani Bari was run over by a train in Soro town on Wednesday and as there are no hospitals in Soro, the body had to be taken to Balasore by train for a post-mortem. The body was taken by the police to the health centre, where it lay for hours on a stretcher and became stiff. To make it easier to tie up the body and carry it, the hospital staff broke it at the hip and carried it to the railway station about 2 km away.

The woman’s son Rabindra Barik said, “They carried my mother in a broken condition. I am helpless to do anything. I pray to the authorities for justice.”
