Members of Parliament (MPs) of the Indian National Congress (INC) walked out of the ongoing Parliament session in protest against the Unnao incident.

On the 6th of December, the INC MPs questioned the Uttar Pradesh Government about the heinous incident which took place in Unnao.

On the 5th of December, 5 men were alleged of thrashing and burning the 2018 Unnao rape survivor when she was on her way to attend the court hearing for the rape case.

Adhir Ranjan, a Lok Sabha member and a member of the INC, said, “The Unnao victim has 95 % burns, what is going on in the Country? On one hand, there is a Lord Ram temple being built and on the other hand, Sita Maiya is being set ablaze. How are criminals feeling so emboldened?”

Mr. Ranjan also referred to the Disha murder and rape case and said in Hyderabad, the culprits were shot dead, however, in UP, the accused got bail.

However, Smriti Irani, the Textiles Minister of India, lashed out at the opposition for turning the issue of women’s safety into a communal and political issue.  She said, “Women safety and respect should not be given communal colour. A member used Telangana and Unnao incidents but selectively forgot Malda. Rape has been used as a political weapon in the West Bengal. Whatever happened in Telangana and Unnao are shameful and accused should be hanged, but these incidents should not be used for doing politics (sic.)”

The major topic of debate in today’s session was the UP Police, UP Government and its stand on the Unnao rape case.  The Unnao rape victim is currently is on a ventilator and is said to be in critical condition. She was airlifted and was admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.

After heated arguments, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sought an apology from the INC MPs.

Apart from the Unnao rape case, the hike in onion prices and the Hyderabad Police shooting the four accused in the Disha murder and rape case in a police encounter are also expected to be discussed during today’s session.

Stay tuned for further updates.
