In a shameful turn of events, a 5 year old offered Uttar Pradesh police her piggy bank as a bribe. The little girl’s mother died two months ago as a result of dowry harassment. The police have not taken any action yet, and in order to make them move faster, the girl offered them her piggy bank.
Manvi, a resident of Meerut district in Western Uttar Pradesh, paid a visit to the Inspector General Ram Kumar at his office on Tuesday. She told him that he could have her savings so as to solve the case faster. The girl was accompanied by her maternal grandfather.
Manvi also said to the officer that she learned that unless a bribe is paid, the police would let her mother’s murder case go unsolved. The officials satiated Manvi and said that her complaint would be immediately addressed and returned her piggy bank.
Seema Kaushik, Manvi’s mother allegedly committed suicide, but her family accused the husband and his family of harassment of dowry. The initial harassment for dowry was then changed and two fake cases were booked by husband’s family in the local court on Seema.
The couple separated four years ago after Seema’s complaints of mental harassment and death threats were ignored by the police. Unable to take the torment, Seema killed herself. Seema’s husband was arrested in relation to this, but Seema’s family said the police demanded a bribe so as prepare a charge sheet which is required in the court to take any action.
J. Ravindra Gaur, a senior police officer in Meerut said, “The police have actually acted in this case, the husband is already in jail and he has not even been granted bail yet. We are yet to get any evidence against the others, like the in laws etc., in the case. However, I have asked the concerned police officials to gather all evidence and act in this case.”
When leaving the police station, Manvi dropped her piggy bank and burst into tears on the floor.
