Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the 5th of February, announced the formation of a trust for the construction of a temple in Ayodhya.

During the ongoing Budget Session in the Parliament, Mr. Modi announced a 15 member trust would be set up.

Mr. Modi said, “I am happy to announce that in the Cabinet meeting today morning, we took significant decisions on the Ayodhya trust. As per the orders of the Supreme Court, we have set up a trust. The Sri Ram Janma Bhumi Tirtha Shetra will be the name of the trust. It will be an independent body.”

The Supreme Court announced its verdict regarding the long standing Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case in November 2019.  Ranjan Gogoi, the former Chief Justice of India (CJI,) was a part of the panel of judges which announced the verdict in favour of the Hindus.   The Apex Court also announced 5 acres of land would be given to the Sunni Waqf Board for the construction of a masjid in Ayodhya.

The decision of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government regarding the formation of the trust came just a few days ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.

The Delhi Assembly elections are due on the 8th of February, 2020.  The PM Modi led Central Government’s main promise during the Lok Sabha elections’ campaign was they would resolve the years’ long Ram temple dispute.

As per the notification and orders of the Apex Court, the trust would be responsible for the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.  With this development, the construction work of the temple is scheduled to begin soon.
