Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, on the 24th of March, Thursday, expressed condolences for the demise of the former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Mr. Ramesh Chandra Lahoti.

According to sources, former CJI Ramesh Chandra Lahoti passed away at the age of 81 year, at a Delhi Hospital on the night of the 23rd of March, Wednesday.

Expressing grief, Mr. Narendra Modi took to Twitter and said, “Anguished by the passing away of former CJI Shri RC Lahoti Ji.  He will be remembered for his contributions to the judiciary and emphasis on ensuring speedy justice to the underprivileged.  Condolences to his family and well wishers.  Om Shanti.”

Besides PM Narendra Modi, the CJI Mr. N.V. Ramana also expressed his condolences and said,  “Justice RC Lahoti will always be remembered as a fearless independent judge till his last breath.  I extend deep condolences to his family and friends.” 

Meanwhile, the former CJI Justice Ramesh Chandra Lahoti was appointed as the 35th CJI on the 1st of June 2004 and he retired on the 1st of  November 2005.
