Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 23rd of July, laid the foundation stone for a water supply project in Manipur.

The event was organised through a video conference.

During the event Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “This project will give clean drinking water to Greater Imphal and 1,700 villages in Manipur.  It will provide a lifeline to these people.”

Mr. Modi said this is the Rakhi gift to the women of Manipur, who would get fresh drinking water through this project.

The new project would help 1 lakh families with irrigation and drinking water.  The Manipur Water Supply project would provide  freshwater household tap connections (FHTCs) to remaining households in the Greater Imphal Planning area, 25 towns, and for 1,731 rural habitations covering 2,80,756 households in 16 districts of Manipur.

The Prime Minister said, “The Manipur Water Supply project will also generate employment for thousands of people.”  He further added, “The country did not stop due to Covid-19,” 

Highlighting the welfare projects designed during the lockdown and issues in the Northeast, PM Modi said, “The Northeast is battling twin challenges – Covid-19 and flood. Many people have to leave their homes due to the flood.  I assure you that everyone is with you in this difficult time.”

The ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ under the Central Government provided the funds for the water project. The project would cost an amount of Rs. 3,000 crores and is under ‘Har Ghar Jal’ mission 2024.  The Central Government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed to provide water to every household across India by 2024.

Najma Heptulla, the Manipur Governor, N. Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur and a few Cabinet ministers of Manipur attended the event.

Union MinisterGajendra Shekhawat and Dr. Jitendra Singh also took part in the programme.
