Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, inaugurated the awaited section of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, on the 28th of December, Tuesday.

Mr. Narendra Modi launched the 9 km long section from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to Moti Jheel, making travel easy for people, especially students. 

The new structure of the metro rail has been developed as per ‘Green Project’ idea and water saving energy.  The new project of 9 km stretch is a part of 32 km long Metro Rail Project, which would cost Rs. 11,000 crores. 

Highlighted features of the new Kanpur Metro Rail Project

  • The corridor from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta is 23.8 km long while the second corridor from Chandra Shekhar Azad Agriculture University to Barra-8 is 8.6 km long.
  • The daily metro services would be available from 6 A.M., to 10:00 P.M., from Wednesday, the 29th of December. 
  • Initially, ticketing with QR code will be available and later on, smart cards will also be introduced for commuters.
  • The Kanpur Metro would turn on the Priority Section from IIT-Kanpur to Motijheel with three coaches.
  • Due to its stringent compliance with the green building codes and parameters, it has been certified for safety management.
  • The entire stretch has been developed in accordance with the green building codes, which makes it safe for the environment.
  • All the nine stations of the Priority Corridor have been certified with a platinum rating by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
  • The new project would Improve urban mobility, which has been one of the key focus areas of growth. 

PM Narendra Modi was the first passenger of the metro, accompanied by Mr. Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and the Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri as they undertook the ride from the IIT metro station to Geeta Nagar.
