Days after the Odisha Triple Train accident, the Union Railway Minister ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the major mishap.

On the night of the 2nd of June, Friday, a passenger train hit the derailed coaches of a goods train, in Odisha’s Balasore.  Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Railway Minister said a high level committee would be set up to investigate the train crash and ordered a probe.

The crash, one of the deadliest in India in recent times, involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train.

Declared as the worst accident in the past years, the Odisha Balasore Train accident has killed over 290 people, and left thousands injured.  The visuals of the railway tracks filled with belongings of people is making rounds on social media platforms.

On the 4th of June, Sunday, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Keeping in mind the situation and circumstances under which the accident took place, and the administrative information gathered so far, the Railway Board is recommending that further inquiry and investigation into the case be undertaken by the CBI.”  He further added that the Union Rail Ministry has identified the root cause behind the tragic accident and those responsible, therefore, a CBI inquiry has been recommended.

Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw further said that somebody changed the configuration and signaling of the tracks, on point and played with the machine leading to this tragic accident.  However, the Union Rail Minister kept quiet about who was responsible and said a final disclosure about how and why would be revealed after a report submitted by an independent investigative agency, like the CBI.

Meanwhile, the tragic triple train accident in Odisha has also became a political conversation, with opposition parties questioning the “Kavach” inauguration of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for safety of passengers traveling in trains.
