Fashion trends and constant change has become a major environmental issue.
New season, new styles, buy more, buy cheap, move on, throw away, the idea has not only generated a fashion statement for people, across the globe, but also played a crucial role in pollution, waste and emissions of fast fashion fueling the triple planetary crisis. Production makes up 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions, dries up water sources, and pollutes rivers and streams.
The black friday sales, local markets, online stores and other constant fashion changes reminds how unsustainable these things have become, making it a major reason for people to think. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is spearheading an initiative towards a zero waste world. As part of this ambitious outlook, UNEP has partnered with Kenyan spoken word poet Beatrice Kariuki and informed how consumers can make a difference with certain ways of using fashion with guidelines. “We need circular industries where old looks are made new,” Kariuki says in the video. “Less packaging, more reuse. Threads that last.” said UNEP.
The Ellen Macarthur Foundation, a UNEP partner, has estimated that a truckload of abandoned textiles is dumped in landfill or incinerated every second. Fast fashion is big business, and while the environmental costs are rising, experts say there is another way: a circular economy for textiles. Overconsumption of cheap fashion has been a major cause for the rising pollution in oceans, with waste being dumped into the oceans.
Moreover, as per the sources, approximately 60% of the purchased fashion lay in the wardrobe and has been worn only once or twice, leading to overconsumption of clothes, not as a necessary thing, but a fashion and lifestyle demand.
However, many charitable trusts and US fashion brands are making efforts to produce sustainable apparel, leading to high consumption of the material and less wastage. In addition, recycling is also an important aspect towards the control of fashion wastage in the world.
