Due to the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus Or COVID-19 , the Election Commission of India (ECI) postponed the Rajya Sabha elections until further notice.
The Rajya Sabha elections 2020 were due to be held on the 26th of March in India. However, due to the increased number of Covid-19 cases, the majority of the states are under lockdown. Some cities have enforced a curfew and Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) has been imposed.
The 55 seats of the Rajya Sabha would be upheld till the 31st of March. After the 31st of March the Election Commission of India (ECI) would conduct a review meeting and take a call regarding the Rajya Sabha elections.
As of now, out of 55 Rajya Sabha seats, 37 Rajya Sabha members were elected unopposed, whereas elections for the remaining 18 seats would be held after the review meeting.
India crossed 500 positive Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 casesand thousands of tests are under process.
