Shyamal Chakraborty,  a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in West Bengal passed away on the 6th of August. 

Mr. Chakroborty, 76 years old, was undergoing treatment for the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 at a Peerless Hospital.   Mr. Shyamal was on ventilator since the 1st of August.

He reported to suffer cardiac arrest on the morning of the 6th of August, following which his condition was said to be stable.

However, in the second cardiac arrest around 1:50 P.M., he passed away

The CPM leader was tested positive for the COVID-19 infection last month and was admitted to a hospital of West Bengal. 

Mr. Chakroborty in his political career served as the Transport Minister of West Bengal thrice between 1982 to 1996.

Shyamal Chakraborty was a veteran trade unionist and a member of the working committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU.) 

He was also a sitting member of the CPM’s key decision making body, the Central Committee. He had earlier served as CPM Rajya Sabha MP, state chief of CITU and member of the CPM state committee.

He is survived by daughter Ushasi Chakraborty, an actor.

His last rites are likely to be held on the evening of the 6th of August or morning of the 7th of August.
