On the 14th of December, Tuesday, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) completed the probe of the Lakhimpur Violent Case. After the completion, the team demanded “attempt to murder” charges for the accused. “The incident was a deliberate act and not of negligence and callousness,” said the SIT. It also moved the Top Court asking to add severa charges.

What is the incident?

On the 3rd of October, eight people were killed after a SUV driven by Ashish Mishra Teni (the son of Mr. Ajay Mishra Teni, the Union Home Minister for Uttar Pradesh) ran over them.  The incident not only sparked tension amongst protesting farmers but also gave political mileage to the opposition, demanding strict action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader’s son, who is responsibile for the murder.

Highlighting the development in the case, on the 11th of October, the Chief Judicial Magistrate Mr. Chintaram allowed three days custody of Mr. Ashish Mishra Teni.  However, the Magistrate allowed the custody with conditions like Mr. Mishra would not be harassed during interrogation and his lawyer would be present during the process.   The State Minister’s son was arrested in the Lakhimpur incident on the night of the 9th of October.

According to sources, the incident took place between 2:30 P.M., to 3:30 P.M., and Mr. Upendra Agarwal, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) who is investigating the case said that the U.P.,  Minister’s son had failed to produce evidence of his whereabouts at the time of the incident.   However, Ashish Mishra Teni denied the allegations and claimed to be present at a wrestling match in Banveerpur and not in Tinkuna, where the incident took place.   In addition, the lawyer of Mr. Ashish Mishra Teni produced the CCTV footage, where Mr. Ashish Mishra Teni was seen attending the event.  However, the CCTV footage timing is not between 2:30 P.M., to 3:30 P.M., but before and after.  Some of the photos and videos show that Ashish Mishra Teni was on the dais in Banveerpur at 2:02 P.M., and 3:47 P.M.
