Smriti Irani, the Minister of Textiles of India, on the 6th of February, shared her thoughts regarding Mamata Banerjee’s ‘moral victory’ comment with regard to the recent verdict of the Supreme Court (SC.)

The SC, on the 5th of February, ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) not to take any violent measures against Rajiv Kumar, the Kolkata Police Commissioner, regarding the Rose Valley and Saradha Group chit fund scams.

The SC also ordered Mr. Kumar to cooperate with the CBI in investigating the scam. The SC said, Mr. Kumar will not go to the CBI office in Shillong, Meghalaya on the 20th of February, but submit all the evidence related to the chit fund scams.

Ms. Irani said, the judgement is “egg on her (Mamata Banerjee’s) face, to celebrate it as a moral victory is a dichotomy available only to Mamata Banerjee’s realm of politics.” She further said, “The political histrionics of Mamata Banerjee was brought to screeching halt by the Supreme Court. The political environment in West Bengal is not suitable. The Supreme Court gave its judgement keeping that in mind and directed Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to present himself in Shillong.”

The comment of Ms. Irani came after Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, claimed, the verdict of the SC is ‘moral victory.’ Ms. Banerjee said, “It is not my victory alone. It is a victory of the Constitution, a victory of Save India.”

Mamata Banerjee was on a three day strike (from the 3rd of February to 5th of February,) protesting against the CBI. The three day strike ended after the SC gave a judgement in favour of Rajiv Kumar.

Ms. Banerjee addressed the public in Esplanade, West Bengal and said, she will be continuing the ‘Save the Constitution’ rally at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

The ‘Save the Constitution’ rally is scheduled to be held on the 13th and 14th of February against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)
