Sonia Gandhi Remains Interim President Of INC, CWC Decides After Hours Long Meeting

Sonia Gandhi, the interim President of the Indian National Congress (INC) would hold the position until the next President of the INC is appointed.

P.L.Punia, a senior leader of the INC, addressed the media after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting.

On the 24th of August, the CWC conducted a video conference meeting to discuss the President of the INC and leadership of the INC under Sonia Gandhi.

After hours of meeting, the CWC decided to elect a new President after six months during another CWC meeting.

P.L. Punia said, members of the INC expressed faith in Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and urged her to continue leading the INC, on which she agreed and would continue as the interim President.

Different voices have emerged within the party with one section comprising sitting MPs and former ministers demanding a collective leadership, while another group has sought the return of Rahul Gandhi to the helm.

The CWC said, “Don’t expect any immediate decision today as elections and selection takes time. We have pleaded with her (Sonia Gandhi) to continue till the time we get (a) new party President.”

Abhijit Mukherjee welcomed the CWC’s Decision and said, “I welcome CWC’s decision to request Madam Sonia Gandhi Ji to continue & her acceptance in this regard. She is the unifier of Congress Party & I am sure Congress will definitely rejuvenate under her Dynamic Leadership Folded hands.”

With this, the CWC meeting ended and Sonia Gandhi would remain the interim President of the Indian National Congress (INC.)
