The Kovalam beach in Tamil Nadu and Eden Beach in Puducherry are now Blue Flag certified beaches in India. Blue Flag certification is a globally recognised status given to clean and safe beaches, following eco friendly environment standards in the world.

Recently, the two Indian beaches, one of Tamil Nadu and one of Puducherry received the global recognition for their beaches. With this, India now has 10 blue flag ( an eco level tag) certified beaches.

To meet the Blue Flag certification, the authority needs to ensure to achieve all the criterias for the tag. The recognition is based on qualification of 33 stringent criterias, including clean water, water quality, safety services, accessibility standards, educational awareness amongst people, environment among many others. The Foundation for Environment Education in Denmark (FEE) accords the globally recognized eco-label – Blue Flag to beaches across the world.

The news was shared by the Union Environment Ministry on the 21st of September. Mr. Bhupender Yadav, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, took to Twitter and said, “Happy to announce India now has 10 International Blue Flag beaches with the addition of Kovalam and Eden beaches this year and recertification for 8 beaches which got the tag in 2020. Another milestone in our journey towards a clean and green India led by PM @NarendraModi Ji.”

The Union Ministry also ensured to bring 100 more Indian beaches under the Blue Flag Certification in the next five years.

Before these two beaches, Odisha’s Golden Beach received the Blue Flag tag.

The other seven Indian beaches, which had got this Blue Flag tag are Shivrajpur Beach (Dwarka, Gujarat), Ghoghla Beach (Diu,) Kasargod and Padubidri beaches i (Karnataka,) Kappad Beach (Kerala,) Rushikonda Beach (Andhra Pradesh) and Radhanagar Beach (Andaman and Nicobar Islands.)

In addition, on the 21st of September, all the 8 beaches got a recertification of the Blue Flag tag for their clean and safe environment.
