Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa Inaugurates Chennai Metro

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday inaugurated the Chennai Metro. She flagged off a train from the Secretariat by pressing the button. The first train started from Alandur station to Koyambedu. The metro will be a fully paid service from the starting day. A large number of people gathered at the station to witness the first train.

On Monday, the train services will run from afternoon till 10 pm. The trains will start at 6 am and end at 10 pm from Tuesday. The timings are expected to extend from 5 am to midnight.

Nearly five or six trains will be running and the frequency will be maintained at 10-12 minutes. The trains will stop for 30 seconds at each station. The minimum fare for the metro is expected to be Rs 10 and maximum Rs 40.

The Congress-led UPA regime has approved the project worth Rs 14,600 crore in 2009 and in the coming years, the metro is expected to cover nearly 32 stations.
