The Tamil Nadu Education Department, on the 1st of June, promoted students of class 1 to 8, in the wake of the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)

The Tamil Nadu Director of Elementary Education announced to promote children of classes 1 to 8 in all State Board schools for the academic year 2020-2021.

The decision was taken under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, in the wake of the second wave of the Wuhan virus. In regard to this, the Director of the School Education Department issued a set of instructions to thr concerned authorities in Tamil Nadu.

As per the section 16 of the RTE Act 2009, every child has right to education and no one should be held back or expelled. In addition, Tamil Nadu has no detention policy for students until they reach class 8.

Meanwhile, highlighting the COVID-19 situation of Tamil Nadu, the State is in state of emergency. Considering the situation, it is close to impossible to conduct offline classes for students. Decision regarding the 12th Boards exams are also yet to be taken.

The rescheduling of the 12th boards exams are yet to be announced.
