Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the 6th of March, announced, the Chennai Central Railway Station will be renamed after M.G. Ramachandran, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Modi made the announcement during a public rally in Kilambakkam, Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu.

However, an official announcement regarding the name change of the Chennai Central Railway Station is yet to be made.

The public rally was organised to officially announce the launch of campaigns by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Modi addressed the rally and announced, the Party is considering making a rule, wherein inflight announcements will be made in Tamil language, apart from Hindi and English. He said, “We are also seriously considering that flights to and from Tamil Nadu will have inflight announcements in Tamil.”

The step to have an inflight announcement in Tamil is said to be a campaign stunt to gain the votes of the Tamilians residing in the State.

Apart from renaming the Chennai Central Railway Station, Modi also launched several welfare schemes, roadways, railways and energy sector projects worth Rs. 5,010 crores.

With the official launch of the campaigns of the NDA, the Modi Government is all set to compete against the alliance of the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu will contest a total of 40 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled between April and May 2019. The major parties contesting are the INC and the BJP.

Stay tuned for further updates about the Lok Sabha elections.
