Chennai: In a shocking incident, a teacher in Tamil Nadu has been arrested for placing burning camphor on the legs of 8 students studying in classes IV and V on Thursday as punishment for poor academic performance.

The incident came into light on Friday when the parents of the affected children raised slogans in front of the school. They urged the school authorities to take stern action against the teacher who meted out the inhuman punishment.

The education department has suspended her and the Head Master of the government school where she teaches. “We have arrested her under the Juvenile Justice Act,” said District Superintendent of Police Narendar Kumar.

A local court has sent the teacher, Vaijayanthimala, to judicial custody till June 24.
