The farmers who were protesting in front of Jantar Mantar in Delhi returned to Chennai and were given a heroic welcome on Tuesday. The farmers protested for 41 days and returned today to the welcoming arms of political and youth groups. The farmers landed, incidentally the same day the opposition DMK had called for a protest.
The farmers, as soon as they reached Chennai started a dharna on the platform until cops escorted them away. Ayyakannu, the head of the protest in Delhi warned that “We are satisfied with the state Government’s assurance but if they fail to fulfill their promise, we will hit the streets again.”
The issue of farmers loan waiver is being used by DMK as a tool to protest against the Central Government. A. Saravanan of DMK said, “DMK is a party committed to the welfare for farmers and we have taken up this issue being a responsible opposition. It was only we acted and called for a bandh that CM Edappadi Palanisamy met the farmers in Delhi.”
The political parties of the opposition have made the farmers cause as a tool against the Central Government. But the farmers believe in their cause and the call for help has put pressure on the State Government. The State Government has now time until May 25 to keep the promises made during the election campaign.
