Two militants Jehangir Ganai and Mohammed Shafi, Alias Sher Gujri, were shot dead by the security forces on Thursday morning. The wife and son of the Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Sher Gujri were called to urge the militant to surrender. However, the militant refused to surrender and was shot dead after a nine hour gun battle.

The CRPF told sources that their intention was to catch the militants alive and urged the militant’s family to convince him to surrender. A senior officer of CRPF told the sources, “The wife was brought from her native village. On arriving, we shifted her to our vehicle and took her to the spot to make an appeal but the effort failed.”

Jehangir was active since 2015 and Sher Gujri since 2014. Jammu and Kshmir police chief S.P. Vaid told a daily that the number of local militants has increased especially after the death of Burhan Wani, the former commander of Hizbul Mujahideen who was killed by the security forces on July 8th, 2016.

Since then, around 214 militants of Hizbul Mujahideen and LeT are currently active in the State. Hizbul Mujahideen is considered to have the largest militant group in Kashmir which is spreading like wildfire!
