A meeting scheduled to discuss the Union Cabinet expansion today, the 6th of July, has been cancelled.

The meeting to discuss the major Cabinet expansion decisions with the top level Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders was scheduled at the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, due to some unsaid issue, the meeting has been cancelled for today.

The BJP National President J.P. Nadda, the Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal, the Railway Minister of India, Narendra Singh Tomar, the Agriculture Minister of India as well as other top ministers were scheduled to attend this meeting. In today’s meeting, the Centre had sought a report from the current Cabinet ministers about what the ministries are planning for the future.

This is not the first time the senior BJP leaders met regarding the Cabinet expansion. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government has been planning to expand the Union Cabinet since June. In regard to this, earlier on the 20th of June, PM Modi and Amit Shah had held similar meetings with the top ministers of the NDA Government. Recently, on the 4th of July, Amit Shah, PM Modi and a few senior leaders held a meeting.

With the cancellation of today’s meeting, which was supposed to be held at 5:00 P.M., there is no update about when the meeting would be rescheduled.

Meanwhile, the Central Government led by the BJP under the leadership of Narendra Modi is said to expand the Union Cabinet soon. As of now, the discussion is going on between the top level senior officials of the BJP. The Union Government is likely to induct new faces and may release the burden of senior leaders from the crucial portfolios.

If sources are to be believed, the Central Government is planning to induct approximately 18 new faces into the Union Cabinet. In addition, special attention would be given to states, which are scheduled to conduct Assembly elections in the coming year.

With this, it would be the first Union Cabinet expansion of the Modi led Government after assuming a second term in 2019. In addition, it is to be noted, the currently there are 53 Councils of Ministers and its maximum number is 81.
