Amit Shah, the Home Minister of India, on the 4th of November, condemned the arrest of Arnab Goswami. 

On the morning of the 4th of November, the Mumbai Police arrested Arnab Goswami, the Editor in Chief of the Republic TV.

Mr. Shah took to Twitter and said, “Congress (Indian National Congress) and its allies have shamed democracy once again. Blatant misuse of state power against Republic TV and Arnab Goswami is an attack on individual freedom and the fourth pillar of democracy.”

Amit Shah alleged the INC and the Shiv Sena led Maharashtra Government for shaming democracy. He said the arrest of Arnab Goswami has reminded him of emergency rule.

This attack on the free press must be and will be opposed.

The Mumbai police said Arnab Goswami is alleged of abetting the suicide of an interior designer.

In 2018, Anvay Naik, 53 year old interior designer and his mother Kumud Naik committed suicide over non payment of dues from Republic TV.

Though the case was closed in 2019 by the Raigad Police, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh directed the Maharashtra Crime Inspection Department (CID) to re open the case and investigate the suicide of Anvay Naik and Kumud Naik.

Sachin Vaje, the CIU Inspector said Mr. Goswami has been arrested under Section 306 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.)

The investigation is underway.
