The 2018 Unnao rape victim was thrashed and burnt alive in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh. On the 5th of December, five men were alleged to have thrashed the 23 year old and set her on fire.
This incident happened when the victim was going to attend the hearing of the rape case which took place in December 2018. In 2018, the 23 year old, a resident of Unnao district, was abducted and raped by Shubham Trivedi and Shivam Trivedi.
The victim filed a case against the 2 culprits in March 2019, following which the UP Police arrested Shubham, the prime accused. However, Shubham was released on bail on the 30th of November 2019. After getting bail, Shubham started following the victim and threatened her. Despite several complaints and FIRs by the victim and her family at the Bihar Police Station, close to Sindupur village in Unnao, the Police did not take any action against Shubham.
On the 5th of December, Shivam and Shubham planned an attack and with the help of 3 men, identified as Harishankar Trivedi, Ram Kishore Trivedi and Umesh Bajpai, thrashed the victim, stabbed her and then burnt her alive. The gruesome incident came to light after an eye witness reported the incident.
According to Ravindra, the eye witness, the victim walked for 1 km with burn injuries and called 112 for help. The PRV and ambulance arrived at the location and took her to a local hospital and then shifted her to the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital in Lucknow. The victim sustained 90 % burn injuries.
Ravindra, who was horrified by the incident, addressed the media and said, “It was only when she came nearer that I found out she was severely burnt.”
Later, the victim also recorded her statement with Dayashankar Pathak, the sub divisional magistrate and named the 5 people who burnt her alive. The Police arrested all the five accused.
Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, condemned the incident and directed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh to investigate the matter.
Awanish Awasthi, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Information and Home Department, said, “The CM has directed the divisional commissioner and IG, Lucknow zone, to visit the spot and submit a report to him by the evening (the 6th of December.)”
As of now, the victim is undergoing treatment at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. On the evening of the 5th of December, she was flown to Delhi for additional treatment. Her condition is said to be serious.
Meanwhile, the Police are interrogating the accused and launched an investigation regarding the same.
