On the 14th of February, Monday, the second phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are underway.

The voting is being held for 55 Assembly seats at 23,404 polling booths.  The Election Commission of India (ECI) set up 12,544 polling stations in 9 districts for the second phase of the elections.  The voting started at 7:00 A.M. and would continue till 6:00 P.M.

According to sources, 586 candidates are in the fray to contest for the 55 assembly seats.  In addition, a total of 2.02 crore voters would be exercising their franchise and deciding the fate of candidates.  Notably, in the second phase, of the total voters, 50% people are Muslims, therefore it is expected to be a tough fight between the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) which is aiming seats in limited constituencies, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) which claimed to win 300 seats of the total 403 assembly seats.

Mr. Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh said, “It’s a reaction to action.  I said 80 percent of people are with BJP and 20 percent always oppose us, and they will do so this time too.  I didn’t say it in the context of religion or caste.  The 80 percent includes those who are happy with the govt’s agenda of security and development; the 20 percent includes people with a negative mentality who always oppose, and support mafias and criminals.  After the first phase of polls, it is clear that this election is truly 80 vs 20.  (The)BJP has received support from over 80% of people.”

Some of the major seats in today’s polls include Saharanpur, Deoband, Bijnor, and Amroha.

Meanwhile, till 9:00 A.M., a total of 9.45% voter turnout was recorded.

The seven phased Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections for 403 seats, started from the 10th of February and will continue till the 7th of March.  The results of the Assembly elections 2022 would be announced on the 10th of March.

Stay tuned for further updates.
