The Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections entered the sixth phase of polls today. These elections are for 49 seats in seven districts which have a dominant population. Samajwadi Party’s Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency is in focus for these elections.

The districts witnessing elections are Gorakhpur, Mau, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Ballia and Deoria. Samajwadi Party is contesting for 40 seats and their alliance is Congress, which is contesting for 9 seats. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is competing for 45 seats and their ally in UP, Apna Dal is contesting for one seat. Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, an ally of BJP is contesting for 3 seats. Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) has entered contestants in all the 49 constituencies for the Assembly polls.

For these 49 seats, 1.72 crore people will be voting which is comprised of 94.60 lakh men and 77.84 lakh women. They will be deciding the fate of 635 candidates in these elections sixth phase.

Rajyavardhan Rathore of BJP has commented that all the other parties have been in UP for too long and have failed to bring any change in the living conditions. Azamgarh witnessed highest voters with 23 percent turning up at polling booths. Most of the voters in these elections have been youth. Though there has been a problem with two EVM machines in few booths, the voting has so far been peaceful.
