Uttarakhand CM Apologises For His Ripped Jeans Remark After Social Media Outrage

On the 19th of March, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat, apologised for his ripped jeans remark. The apology of Mr. Rawat came after social media trolled Mr. Tirath Singh for his comments against the clothes of women.

Twitter users, mainly women took to their handles and posted a photo of themselves, wearing ripped jeans with #rippedjeans #UttarakhandCM.

Leaders like Jaya Bachchan, Priyanka Gandhi and actress Kangana Ranuat also took a dig at Tirath Singh Rawat.

In the view of the social media outrage, Mr. Tirath Singh apologised and said he did not intend to hurt anybody with his comments. However, his apology does not changed the objection with the torn jeans.

Mr. Rawat expressed his perception regarding ripped jeans and once again, said it to be wrong. He said, he has no problem with jeans but wearing “torn” ones is “not right.” He continued and said, “If we inculcate good values and discipline in children, they will never fail in future.” He said, the statement was made at a programme to keep children away from intoxicants and other evils. He also expressed his concern regarding the values and discipline children would intake from previous generations.

Describing one such experience Mr. Tirath Singh Rawat said a woman who was a co passenger to him was wearing boots, jeans ripped at the knees, bangles in her hands and was with two children. He said she runs an NGO, goes out in society and has two children and wondered what values she would give them.

Mr. Tirath Singh described himself as a man from a rural background and said whenever his pants were torn in schooldays, he feared that his teacher would scold him. He said, “Due to discipline and values, we used to cover it with a patch.” He added, “Youngsters follow strange fashion trends due to a lack of values and consider themselves to be big shots after wearing jeans ripped at the knees. Women also follow such trends.”

Tirath Singh Rawat recently sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.
