On the 3rd of June, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee, announced a major relief for restaurants and hotels.  

On Thursday, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Government allowed restaurants with vaccinated staff to operate from 5:00 P.M., to 8:00 P.M., in West Bengal, amid the imposed lockdown.   

The decision was taken after a lot of discussion over the likelihood of restaurants and hotels, who are suffering losses due to the lockdown.  The restaurant which would function needs to follow all the guidelines of the COVID-19, vaccinate all their staff and ensure basics like wearing face masks, social distancing and Sanitization. 

Ms. Mamata Bannerjee said, “We don’t want hotels to stay shut.”  She further said, “We are not in favour of shutting down business.  But at the same time, we must try and control the disease so that we don’t have to face another wave (sic.)”

Besides allowing restaurants to operate, recently on the 31st of May, the TMC Government allowed retail shops including book stalls, saree sellers and others to open between 12 noon to 3:00 P.M.  In addition, construction activities were permitted to resume after vaccinating all workers, operations in the Information Technology sector were also allowed with 10 % strength between 12:00 P.M., to 3:00 P.M.

In addition, shopping malls are allowed to open from the 16th of June with 25 % staff between 5:00 P.M., to 8:00 P.M.  Based on the functioning of the malls, the West Bengal Government would decide upon the reopening of malls for a long time. 

As of now, West Bengal is witnessing a strict lockdown with a few restrictions.  The imposed lockdown is in effect till the 15th of June 2021, to curtail the spread of the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)
