Sindhu Smashes it Again, Wins the China Open Super Series

Almost exactly 3 months after she wore the silver medal at the Rio Olympics this year, P. V. Sindhu is back in limelight again making India proud. The ace shuttler brought home the Super Series title at China Open, beating China’s Sun Yu in an intense 3-part match.

It was a first for Sindhu and a dream come true as she put it. “It has been a dream for a long time to win a super series. After the Olympics, everyone was asking me what’s next? It was important for me to get a super series title. Life changed a lot after the Olympics. People thought I will take a long time to get back. But I worked hard,” Sindhu said. “This is my first super series title and I am very happy, I have no words to express. Last time I played Denmark final,” she added.

The final that lasted one hour and nine minutes had three matches with the scoreboard showing 21-11, 17-21 and finally 21-11, in favour of Sindhu. Sun Yu put up a good fight in the second match, getting ahead of Sindhu through her meticulous attacks, but Sindhu came back with a smashing win for the third round.

The finals round didn’t come so easy to Sindhu though. She had to battle it out with some tough competition out there like South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun and China’s He Bingjiao. The seventh seed player was finally able to bag the gold after narrowly missing the mark last year at her maiden Super Series final at the Denmark Open as she lost to the 2012 Olympic champion China’s Li Xuerei.

Saina Nehwal and K. Srikanth had won the China Open in 2014 before and P. V. Sindhu seemed very happy to follow in their footsteps although going by her winning graph, she might soon be the one leading the pack.
