On the 4th of August, Thursday, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India,  congratulated weightlifter Gurdeep Singh after he clinched a bronze medal.

On the 6th day of the Commonwealth Games 2022, weightlifter Gurdeep Singh secured a third position and bronze medal in the men’s 109-plus kg final.  Extending congratulatory wishes to Gurdeep Singh, Mr. Narendra Modi tweeted, “Hard work and dedication lead to outstanding outcomes…this is what Gurdeep Singh has shown by winning the Bronze medal in weightlifting at the CWG.  He has furthered the spirit of joy among our citizens.  Congratulations and best wishes to him.”

Getting into the details of the weightlifting event, in the Snatch category, Gurdeep Singh failed to lift 167 kg in his first attempt.  In the second attempt, he lifted 167 kg.  In the third and final attempt in the category, he added more weight but was unsuccessful in lifting 173 kg.  He ended the Snatch round with the best of 167 kg. 

In the Clean and Jerk category, Gurdeep Singh gave a sensational performance as he lifted 207 kg in the first attempt. Indian weightlifter failed his second attempt and could not lift 215 kg. In his final and third attempts in the category, he lifted 223kg successfully. He finished with a combined total of 390kg.

With this, India so far won 18 medals, including 5 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 7 bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games 2022, being held at Birmingham, England, the United Kingdom.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 started on the 28th of July and would continue till the 8th of August.
