Another alleged dowry suicide has come to light in Hyderabad, Malli Vemulapalli Vineela committed suicide at her home in Chandanagar on Saturday night. Vineela was from Nellore district in Andra Pradesh and decided to take her life when her husband and daughter weren’t at home.

Uday Lakshmi, the mother of Vineela filed for dowry harassment against the husband. Uday Lakshmi declared that her son in law was regularly harassing her daughter for money as he was unemployed. The accused Vikram Jayasimha has been taken into police custody and a complaint has been registered.

The police explained on Saturday night when Vikram returned home, his wife Vineela did not answer the door. The husband asked the watchman for help and broke the door down finding his wife hanging from the ceiling. In an attempt to revive her, they rushed Vineela to the hospital but was declared ‘brought dead.’

Reports have stated that the two were married in November 2010 and the case has been registered under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that deals with dowry death. This is one of many cases that have been filed against dowry deaths in the city. Assistant Commissioner of Police of the SHE Team, D. Kavitha gave a statement to The News Minute, “We have received over 900 cases of domestic violence in nine months, out of which 20% of the cases are of dowry harassment. We still need to compile the data for dowry death cases from different parts of the city police stations.”
