In Telangana, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Employees’ Union and sanitation workers protested outside the commissioner’s office.

On the 23rd of June, the GHMC union leaders protested, demanding the removal of the biometric attendance system for the sanitation staff and making outsourcing contract staff permanent.  They claimed that the biometric machines were faulty and caused the incorrect recording of attendance, resulting in unfair cuts in the salaries of sanitation staff.  They also asked the GHMC Commissioner, Mr. Lokesh Kumar, regarding the three pending Dearness Allowance (DA,) payments which were supposed to be provided to staff every six months and have been pending for over a year.

The GHMC Union submitted a memorandum concerning their demands to the concerned authorities.  Mr. Udhari Gopal, president of the GHMC Employees Union said, “around 800 workers have been fired without any notice and their salaries were not paid. The government has brought in a private civic infrastructure company, like Ramky, that has resulted in the lay off of hundreds of GHMC workers.”

During the protest, the workers burned Chief Minister of Telangana Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao’s effigy alleging that his policies are against the welfare of the GHMC workers.  They displayed placards criticizing the Chief Minister (CM) and Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA and UD) Minister Mr. K.T. Rama Rao.  They even raised slogans against the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS.)

The GHMC staff and contract employees are likely to continue their protest in the Telugu State of Telangana until their demands are met.
