A political row has intensified in Telangana over the release of irrigation water from the Jurala Project, with BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) demanding water for farmers and the release of detained party leaders.
Farmers in the Jurala ayacut have been protesting for the past few days, saying their standing crops need water. Police stopped farmers and BRS leaders from reaching the project on Monday. Former BRS MLA Chittem Rammohan Reddy was taken into custody, while former ministers S Niranjan Reddy, C Laxma Reddy and V Srinivas Goud were placed under house arrest, according to reports.
KTR condemned the detentions and alleged that the Congress government was refusing to release available water for irrigation. He claimed that around 9 TMCft was available at Jurala and said farmers were struggling to protect their crops. The figure was part of KTR’s statement and was not independently confirmed in all reports.
KTR demanded the immediate release of water and the detained leaders. He also warned that the BRS could launch a larger protest if the government did not change its position.
