The Telangana government plans to begin restoration work on the Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages of the Kaleshwaram project by mid-November. The work is targeted for completion before the 2027 monsoon, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy said.
The government has finalised the restoration designs. They will be presented to the Central Water Commission (CWC) technical committee on October 5 for review. The designs will also undergo scientific testing at the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) in Pune.
The proposed work includes strengthening the foundations through grouting, extending stilling basins and building new cut-off walls. These steps aim to improve foundation stability and control seepage.
The barrages will be opened for operation only after restoration is completed and the required safety clearances are received. Tenders will be called after the necessary technical approvals.
