K.T. Rama Rao, the Information Technology (IT) Minister of Telangana, launched 3,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots in Hyderabad.

The initiative of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government to install WiFi hotspots was under Telangana’s HyFi programme. On the 4th of August, the TRS Working President KTR announced free internet access at these spots for the public.

The internet would be provided by the leading internet provider ACT Fibernet, which would connect 4,000 government schools, basti dawakhanas, shopping malls, metro stations, hospitals, public libraries and other places with free internet services. An individual would get free internet access for 45 minutes with 25 Mbps speed and 1 GB per day limit.

During the launch event, Mr. K.T. Rama Rao said Hyderabad is now home to India’s largest free WiFi network. He also appreciated the ACT Fibernet, which provided internet facilities, making the aim of free internet access possible. He said, “You have done a fabulous job.” He also asked the Bengaluru based ACT Fibernet company to move to Hyderabad and work with the State Government for future goals.

KTR asked the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi to ensure the functioning of the free WiFi, without any interruption. He said, “They (Act Fibernet) have put up 50 people as support, but the city should also do its part.”

After this, the TRS Government is also planning to provide internet facilities on board trains at several metro stations of Hyderabad.
