Ms. Mayawati, the President of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister slammed the Telangana Government.
On the 24th of June, Saturday, Ms. Mayawati alleged the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Government for ‘tampering with the Preamble of the Constitution printed on the cover of class 10 social sciences textbooks.
In a tweet, the BSP chief said that the disappearance of the words ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ from the Preamble “raises questions on the integrity and functioning of the government.”
The tweet read, “तेलंगाना में क्लास 10 के सोशल साइन्स की किताबों की कवर पर छपे संविधान के प्रस्तावना में छेड़छाड़ व उससे ’सेक्युलर’, ’सोशलिस्ट’ शब्द का गायब होना सरकार की निष्ठा व कार्यकलाप पर सवाल खड़े करता है। ऐसी लापरवाही गंभीर मामला। सरकार ध्यान दे। पवित्र संविधान के प्रति कर्तव्यनिष्ठा जरूरी.”

The remark of the BSP National President came after the K. Chandrashekar Rao led Telangana Government removed ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ words from the Preamble of the Constitution printed on the cover page of the class X State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) textbooks.
The SCERT in Telangana distributed the latest social studies textbook (both Telugu and English medium) as the state celebrated ‘Telangana Education Day’. With the 42nd Amendment made to the Constitution in 1976, the words ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ were added to the existing ‘Sovereign Democratic Republic’ in the Preamble.
However, the new SCERT textbooks stirred controversy as the Preamble printed on them was altered in contradiction to the amendment. Following the controversy, SCERT director M Radha Reddy issued a statement that the mistake was ‘unintentional’ and occurred due to oversight while downloading the image at the time of designing the cover.
