In Hyderabad, Dr. Bharat Reddy runs a restaurant named Millet Marvels which focuses on whole grain food.

Believed to have originated in the North African region, Millet is a staple food in Eastern Europe and Asia. Millets are highly nutritious and used for cooking as a replacement for rice and wheat. Unlike rice or wheat, which usually are grown with humongous amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, millets require only a small amount of organic inputs in the soil for growth.

Typically, to.grow one kilogram of rice, you need 5,000 litres of water, whereas the same amount of millets can be grown by using just 200 litres.

There are nine varieties of millets, out of which three are major crops are ragi, jowar and bajra.

As it is fairly high in protein with high alkalinity and a good source of various vitamins and trace elements, it is recommended by many nutritionists and dietitians.

Considering the trend of whole grain food and millets, Dr. Bharath Reddy, who is also a senior consultant cardiologist, started the one of its kind restaurant, which serves food made of millets and whole grains. The restaurant was launched in August 2020 at Film Nagar, Hyderabad, Telangana.

Dr. Bharath Reddy said, “When I researched this, I discovered that the grains were rich in protein, magnesium and other nutrients. Long ago, these arrived in Asia including China and India all the way from Africa.”

Millet Marvels, the restaurant of Mr. Bharath Reddy, has millet ‘laddu, millet burgers, millet muesli and other such whole grain edibles.  Besides junk food made with healthy millets, this restaurant serves dosa, idli, vada, puri, uthappam and all food items using millets as base. In addition, the dishes at this unique restaurant are available at affordable prices.

Besides cooked dishes, the restaurant also sells whole grains sourced from farmers in Telangana’s Vikarabad in Telangana, Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh and some parts of Karnataka.

According to Dr. Bharat it is just not business but a responsible step to create awareness about making the right food choice. He said, “If you continue eating polished white rice and wheat, you’ll end up taking medications from the age of 35 to 40.”

Emphasising on the need of proper diet and healthy lifestyle, Dr. Bharath Reddy said, “If you look at people who reach the age of 40, out of 100 of them, 70 are either pre diabetic or diabetic. If this is the scenario now, then in the next five years, everybody will turn into either diabetic or pre-diabetic. So instead of China, India will become the diabetic capital of the world.

Describing his Millet Marvels, Dr. Reddy said, “We put the word millets in the restaurant’s name as we want people to know that they are eating millets when they step into our outlets and because we want to increase the awareness around it. Giving something worthwhile back to society is the main aim behind starting this.”

Tollywood actors like Nagarjuna, Nabha Natesh, Chiranjeevi and other Telugu Industry celebrities are following the millet diet and are relying on whole grain millets for their healthy lifestyle.

Nagarjuna recently posted a tweet regarding the importance of a healthy diet, especially whole grain millets. He said, “It’s a healthy replacement for rice and especially wheat.”

It is to be noted, Telugu Start Akkineni Nagarjuna has been taking millets, a good replacement of rice, for the last four years.

During the time of ongoing lockdown and Wuhan virus pandemic, one can order food from Millet Marvels, as it is available for home delivery through food delivery app, Zomato.
