Tamilisai Soundararajan Takes Oath As Lieutenant Governor Of Puducherry, Becomes 5th Women Lt. Governor

On the 18th of February, Tamilisai Soundararajan, the Governor of Telangana, took additional charge as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

In a sudden development, Kiran Bedi, the Former Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry was removed and Ms. Soundararajan was given the additional charge. 

The decision was taken by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind. 

While the orders were issued on the night of the 16th of February, Ms. Soundararajan took over on the 18th of February.

Tamilisai Soundararajan took the oath of office in Tamil on the morning of the 18th of February, in the presence of Chief Minister of Puducherry, V. Narayanasamy.  The oath taking ceremony was held at Raj Nivas in Puducherry. 

The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Sanjib Banerjee administered the oath of office to Ms. Soundararajan at a simple function. 

The Chief Minister Office (CMO) took to Twitter and said, “HCM Shri V. Narayanasamy warmly welcomed the new HLG Smt. Tamilisai Soundararajan at #RajNivas #Puducherry.”

Tamilisai Soundararajan is the fifth woman to hold the position of Lieutenant Governor in Puducherry.  Meanwhile, Ms. Soundararajan is the first Tamil speaking person who has become the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. 

The other four women lieutenant governors were Chandrawati, Rajendra Kumari Bajpai, Rajani Rai and Kiran Bedi.
