The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government is all set to begin old age pensions to the eligible citizens of Telangana. People aged 57 years and above would be provided the old age pensions, under the State Government’s Aasara Pension welfare scheme.
K.Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, on the 4th of July, announced the scheme and said the pension money would be given from the month of August. The launch of the scheme was done by the State Chief Minister during an event in Rajanna Siricilla district of Telangana. Besides announcing the pension scheme, the TRS Government also announced to reduce the pension age limit to 57 years old from the previous 65 years old. With this, many people who were left out of the scheme, got eligibility and now could avail the pension money.
In the 2018 Assembly elections, the TRS promised to implement a pension scheme and reduce the age limit for the same. Fulfilling the same, in 2019 the State Cabinet approved the proposal and introduced the pension scheme.
However, in 2021, the Telangana Government launched the scheme with new guidelines and reduced age limit.
So far, only those aged 65 and above were eligible for the pension scheme. The move to reduce the minimum age for eligibility was made with a view to support more persons in their advanced years who are below the poverty line. In addition, the monthly pension for various categories of beneficiaries was also increased from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 2,016 per month as per the election promise.
The pension amount for people above 57 years old would be given from the month of August 2021.
