The Election Commission (EC) of Telangana, on the 23rd of December, announced the dates for the Municipal elections in the State.

The elections for 120 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations are scheduled to be held on the 22nd of January, 2020 and the notification regarding the same would be issued on the 7th of January.

The polling would be conducted for 2,727 wards in 120 municipalities and 385 wards in 10 municipal corporations in Telangana.  In addition, this time, 70 urban local bodies (ULBs) would contest the elections for the first time as the State Government created them recently.

Newly created municipal corporations like Badangpet, Meerpet, Bandlaguda Jagir, Boduppal, Peerzadiguda, Jawaharnagar and Nizampet would contest the elections for the first time.

An Election Commission (EC) official said, “Elections will not be held for 12 ULBs due to pending court cases and other issues. The State Government had already submitted ward wise reservations based on which election schedule has been released. Orders have been issued for publication of draft photo electoral rolls on December 30.”

Candidates who wish to contest the municipal elections can submit their nominations between the 8th of January and the 10th of January.  The scrutiny of nominations would be carried out on the 11th of January and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is the 14th of January.

The State EC would release the draft photo of electoral rolls or voter list on the 30th of December, following which, the voters in the State can raise objections against it between the 31st of January and the 2nd of January.  After reviewing all the objections against the ward wise photo electoral rolls on the 3rd of January, the EC would publish the final voter list on the 4th of January.

Though the photo electoral rolls would be published on the 4th of January, the EC officials can include, delete or correct the draft list till the election notification is issued on the 7th of January.

Besides, district election authorities are also expected to conduct a meeting with parties’ leaders and local representatives at the district level on the 31st December and the 1st of January.

Though the election notification is yet to be declared officially, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into effect from the 23rd of December.

Stay tuned for further updates.
