After reporting Omicron cases from foreign returnees, Telangana reported the first case of community transmission.
On Tuesday, the 21st of December, a doctor, tested positive for the new variant of Wuhan virus, Omicron. An oncologist of a large corporate hospital was treating an Omicron-positive cancer patient. During the treatment, the doctor himself showed symptoms and was later tested positive for the new variant of COVID-19. His reports were confirmed after conducting a genome sequencing test, to confirm Omicron. The Telangana Health Department also started collecting samples from all the patients treated by the doctor, as well as all other contacts from December 16.
With this, the doctor became the first Omicron case of local transmission in Hyderabad, Telangana.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, besides the local transmission case, three foreign returnees also tested positive for the new variant. The travelers arrived at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad from not at risk countries and tested positive for Omicron. With this, the total number of Omicron cases in Telangana increased to 24
In addition, considering the situation of the Telugu State with the rising number of Omicron cases, the Telangana Health department issued strict guidelines.
Meanwhile, as of date, 9,122 passengers have arrived in Hyderabad from ‘at-risk’ countries.
