On the 20th of December, Monsay, India’s Omicron case count stood at 161. The number rose with new cases of the Wuhan virus variant being reported from Kerala, Delhi and Karnataka.

While addressing the Rajya Sabha on Monday, the Union Health Minister Mr. Mansukh Mandaviya said, “As of now, India has 161 Omicron cases… We are monitoring the situation daily with experts.” He further said, “With our experience during the first and second waves, to ensure that we don’t face problems if variant spreads, we have arranged a buffer stock of important medicines.”

Mr. Mansukh Mandaviya also assured that the Central Government is taking all the necessary measures to control the Wuhan virus as well as the Omicron is spread in India. He also informed about the availability of COVID-19 vaccines with the Indian states and union territories (UTs.) As of now, 17 crore vaccine doses are available and the number of doses are likely to increase to 45 crores in the coming two months.

Highlighting about the booster shots and vaccine effectiveness questions in the Rajya Sabha, the Union Health Minister said, a complete clarification is expected in a week.

Meanwhile, with the cases steadily rising in the country, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said all samples that test positive for the infection will now be sent for genome sequencing. He also urged the Centre to allow the administration of booster shots to the fully vaccinated residents of Delhi. He appealed to people not to panic and wear masks as they are the most effective protection against the virus.

On the other hand, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has appealed to citizens to avoid gatherings and parties during the upcoming Christmas festival and New Year, and warned of stringent action against those who flout rules.
