The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government assured to provide free drinking water supply to the Secunderabad Cantonment Board.  As promised, the K. Chandrashekar Rao Government is working to fulfill the drinking water supply needs with 31,745 water connections.

Now, the free drinking water supply scheme has been extended to the Secunderabad Cantonment Board, providing 20,000-liter water to households every month, in Secunderabad.  On the 3rd of March, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA and UD) Department, released a statement and said that the Secunderabad Cantonment Board would receive 20,000 liters of free drinking water every month.  Implemented from February 2022, all the  domestic slum categories, domestic households and multi-storeyed buildings would be receiving free drinking water.

According to sources, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board said that the arrears of demand raised Rs. 34.17 crore up to December 2021 and the bill to be raised for the month of January should be paid by the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) to HMWSSB.   Furthermore, extending the scheme to Secunderabad, the Telangana Government asked the SCB to ensure identity verification to avail the benefits.

According to sources, The SCB needs to conduct Aadhaar Card authentication and working meters for the domestic consumers, barring slums.  The Aadhaar authentication is a must for the residents in apartment complexes to apply for the 20,000 L free water supply scheme.

The SCB would continue its operations and maintenance and revenue collection as per the present status, such as pumping infrastructure, laying of new pipelines or replacing existing ones. The additional expenses of the aforementioned work would be handled by the SCB.

The Telangana Animal Husbandry Minister Mr. Talasani Srinivas Yadav said that in spite of the TRS Government’s increased expenditure, Mr. K Chandrasekhara Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, decided to implement the free drinking water scheme in cantonment for the benefit of the poor families. Due to the extension of the Scheme, the Telangana Government would have an extra expenditure of Rs. 16.08 crores, annually.  He said, “Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had decided to implement the Free Drinking Water Scheme in SCB limits to benefit the poor families despite the State government incurring an expenditure of around Rs 16.8 crore per year on account of the scheme.” (sic)

Free drinking water for the people of Telangana under the Mission Bhagirathi, is a major project undertaken by the TRS Government in Telangana.  The KCR Government, in its 2018 Party manifesto, announced to provide free drinking water to the majority of households by 2023.
