The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) ministers conducted a meeting regarding the arrangements of the Bonalu festival in Telangana.

The Endowments Minister of Telangana A. Indrakaran Reddy, the Telangana Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav and the Telangana Home Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali were present during the meeting with the concerned officials. The meeting was held on the 29th of June, at Pragati Bhavan, Hyderabad, Telangana.

During the meeting, the TRS ministers asked officials to make elaborate arrangements of the festivals at temples of Telangana. In addition, they directed officials to ensure the protocols of the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)

They also asked the officials responsible for the arrangements to ensure the celebrations reflect Telangana’s culture and traditions. In regard to this, the K. Chandrashekar Rao led TRS Government recently released an amount of Rs. 15 crores. The three TRS ministers who chaired the meeting, asked officials to use the funds and organise the grand Bonalu festival across Telangana temples. The Temple Committees and officials should make elaborate arrangements, especially queue lines, provision of water and other facilities for devotees coming for the celebrations.

Celebrated in July every year, the Bonalu festival is a traditional Hindu festival to celebrate the Goddess Mahakali. Special poojas are performed for Renuka Yellamma (one of the many regional forms of Mahakali) on the first and last day of the festival. In Telangana, the festival is also considered a thanksgiving to the Goddess for fulfillment of vows. Women would be offering rice cooked with jaggery and milk meals as an offering to the Goddess. Following the tradition, women would offer the prepared meals in a new brass or earthen pot adorned with neem leaves, turmeric, vermilion and would light up a diya on top of the pot. Women then would carry these pots on their heads and march to several kali temples in the State.

According to sources, this year K. Chandrashekhar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, is said to have expressed a desire to offer the Bangaru Bonam on behalf of the TRS Government.

Amid the Novel Coronavirus pandemic, the State Government officials are said to be in full swing to celebrate the festival on a grand note. Sanitation work on roads, lightings and other arrangements would be made for the grand procession from the Golconda Fort.

This year, the grand Bonalu festival is set to begin from the 11th of July and would end on the 8th of August.
