The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is continuing to purchase paddy from farmers in the Telugu State of Telangana.

On the 24th of May, Tuesday, the TRS Government purchased 30.1 lakh metric tons of paddy worth Rs. 5,888 crores.  The crops were purchased at Rythu Bharosa Centres, established across the State and approximately 4.72 lakh farmers sold paddy, till the 23rd of May.

According to sources, the procurement of paddy would continue till the 10th of June, as the K. Chandrashekar Rao-led TRS Government would reach its target for the Yasangi (Rabi) season.  It is to be noted that the Telangana Government has set a target of about 65 lakh metric tons where the remaining paddy is being sold in the open market.

The aforementioned data regarding the purchase of paddy was confirmed through a government release, issued on the 24th of May.  Mr. Gangula Kamalakar, the Civil Supplies Minister of Telangana, the TRS Government would suffer a loss of Rs. 3,000 crore for procuring the paddy entirely without the Centre’s support.   Furthermore, about 10,000 metric tonnes of paddy which got wet during recent unseasonal rains across the State, have also been purchased from farmers.

Mr. Gangula Kamalakar said, “The Centre had not only failed to extend any support, but also created hurdles at every juncture including a short supply of gunny bags, stopping procurement in the name of physical verification and other such activities.  We have already completed paddy procurement in around 5,000 of total 6,544 procurement centers opened in the State.”

As of now, the paddy procurement has been completed in districts like Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Bhadradri Kothagudem.  In the remaining district, the paddy procurement process would be completed by the 10th of June.
