Tamil Nadu’s Mariyappan Thangavelu won a gold medal in the men’s high jump T-42 event at the Rio Paralympics, who shared the victory podium with Varun Singh Bhati, who won a bronze at the same event, this was the first time two Indians won at the same event at the Olympics.
The medal winners got a lot of congratulatory messages from people and ministries and some prominent personalities. But it seems like rewards are not pouring in for the winners like they did for P.V.Sindhu, Dipa Karmakar and Sakshi Malik.
A Rs. 2 crore award from the Jayalalitha government for Thangavelu and 75 lakhs from Union sports ministry was declared in a tweet for the medal winning high jumpers. Greater Noida’s Bhati, will be awarded Rs. 30 lakhs. No more rewards were announced after this.
We hope that the Paralympics winners also get equal attention and rewards from celebrities like our Olympians did.
