A 22 year old woman Nupur Saraswat was not allowed to occupy a room at Hotel Deccan. The hotel’s reason for rejecting the woman service was that she was single! Goibibo is linked to the hotel and the woman had made an online booking through the website.
The website was angry and delisted the hotel from their portal and apologized to the woman for the inconvenience.
Hotel Deccan, is located in Erragadda in Hyderabad and Nupur had booked the accommodation from Singapore before arriving in India.
She arrived at the hotel at 8:30 A.M., on June 24th and was denied accommodation by the staff even though she had made a prior booking. Nupur decided to put this up on social media which read, “Single women are not allowed to stay in Hyderabad hotels.”
This stirred up a lot of attention on the internet and Goibibo took it upon themselves to make amends. Goibibo management said, “Recently, one of our customers raised an issue about being denied check in by Hotel Deccan, as she was a single woman. We take such issues very seriously backed with action. We want to share with the entire community about the actions that we are taking. We gave Nupur an upgrade and higher rated hotel, complimentary. We refunded the full amount for the hotel that was booked. We have delisted the Hotel Deccan, Erragadda from our platform pending the investigation. We are taking up the issue for the rationale behind such policies.”
The Manager of Hotel Deccan, P. Ganesh was questioned and he explained that they kept her safety in mind while rejecting her accommodation. Ganesh said, “The hotel management has taken such decision to prevent untoward incidents.”
