A 20 year old Dalit woman from Satna in Madhya Pradesh alleged she was gang raped for months and forced to abort her 5 month old fetus. The woman shocked the Superintendent of police when she brought the fetus to the police station as proof.
The woman named Dheeraj Pandey and his brother Neeraj Pandey as the main accused. She also spoke of their accomplices and a nurse who conducted the abortion. Superintendent of police Rajesh Hingankar stated several cases were registered against the brothers and their accomplices Prem Singh and Rajkumar.
Hingankar said, “Cases under rape, kidnapping, criminal intimidation, SC/ST act (Scheduled Castes and Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989) arms act and other sections have been registered against the accused.”
The woman told the police she was regularly raped by the brothers. She further stated she filed a complaint with the Satna Superintendent but there was no action taken.
Madhya Pradesh is the most dangerous State in India for women. Statistics show one woman is raped every two hours in Madhya Pradesh. In 2017, 5,300 rape cases were registered and 4,882 cases the previous year.
